Eli Rutten

It is a great honor for Eli to be a part of Music of Remembrance. Performing music in the memory of dark, tragic events of human history carries hope for "never again". As a 15 year old high school student, Eli knows that music can help bring forward stories that might otherwise fade, giving a voice to those who lived through hardship, pain, but also courage.

Eli Rutten began studying music at the age of 8, learning clarinet from his grandfather who himself is a retired clarinetist. What began as trying out an instrument has become an important part of his life. Eli is drawn to the clarinet’s warm and expressive sound. He values music because it is a way to connect with others, whether that would be through performance, collaboration, or helping younger students grow.

Eli currently studies with an outstanding clarinetist and teacher Emil Khudyev, whose mentorship has helped him continue to develop as a musician.

He performs as a clarinet soloist in jazz band, serves as lead first clarinet in his school's wind ensemble, and plays with the SYSO Junior Orchestra. He also participated in chamber music, school theater (pit) and tutored middle school band students in grades 6-8.

With Emil Khudyev’s guidance, in addition to MOR, Eli has won American Protégé and was named first alternate for State in his district.

Outside of playing clarinet, Eli is a volunteer at Camp Prov, a Providence hospital affiliated program supporting children with disabilities through summer camps, where he learned the importance of patience, responsibility, and encouragement. Eli also loves animals and volunteers at Everett Animal Shelter.

Eli enjoys spending time with his parents, grandparents, older brother, and high school friends.
