For more than a quarter-century, Music of Remembrance has led the way with music that tells stories the world needs to hear. Works that honor those who have stood up to oppression, and that give voice to the voiceless. Premieres of pathbreaking works that we’ve commissioned from today’s leading composers to address compelling challenges to human rights and dignity in our own time.
Our season opener on November 1, JOURNEYS, features Steve Reich’s Different Trains, capturing the sounds and voices that Reich remembered from the cross-country trains of his childhood during WWII, juxtaposed with the echoes of the transports that were carrying European children to a very different fate. In a work with special relevance for today, Sahba Aminikia’s Stormy Seas tells the compelling true stories of five child boat refugees in search of safety and freedom in new lands.
RESILIENCE, on March 14, features the world premiere of another work of urgent relevance: a new composition by Afghan-born Milad Yousufi, giving voice to the lived experiences of Afghan women. And you’ll be swept away by new dances that we’ve commissioned from Donald Byrd of Spectrum Dance Theater for scintillating music by the iconoclastic Erwin Schulhoff.
WOMEN IN THE SHADOWS, on May 16, explores the inner worlds of women artists overshadowed by history. The featured work, Camille Claudel: Into the Fire, a theatrical song cycle by Jake Heggie and Gene Scheer, traces the life of the brilliant French sculptor.
As a subscriber, you’ll also receive preferred reserved seating for our annual free-to-the-community ART FROM ASHES concert marking International Holocaust Remembrance Day. We’ll be joined by the Seattle Girls Chorus in the world premiere of Lori Laitman’s Bonaco, setting the words of that secret magazine created by teenage girl prisoners in the Terezín concentration camp. And the Northwest Boychoir will perform a new choral arrangement of haunting songs that Viktor Ullmann composed in Terezín before he was sent to his death in Auschwitz.
These are just a few of the season’s highlights. We’ll be processing tickets orders later this summer, and you will receive your tickets by mail after Labor Day. Don’t forget that you’re entitled, as season ticket subscribers, to a 20% discount on additional single concert tickets using code MOR20.
