Witness to Courage
Our opening concert is a profound reflection on exile and home, grief and hope, memory and renewal. Jake Heggie’s Crossing Borders is a lyrical and deeply personal meditation on the physical and emotional journeys that define us—stories of migration, transformation, and the longing for home. The work gives voice to those navigating unfamiliar landscapes, both geographic and emotional. Sparks of Glory by American composer Paul Schoenfield is a tribute to courageous Holocaust defiance, based on four true stories and their accounts of the heroic deeds of people too modest to recognize their own heroism. It captures the light that flickers even in the darkest times. Plus, the works of two resistance composers who made the Netherlands their home: Géza Frid, whose early string trio reflects his Hungarian roots, and William Hilsley, whose charming dances belie the circumstances of their creation in a POW camp.
