Art From Ashes
Bridging generations to mark International Holocaust Remembrance Day

For our annual concert marking the anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz, we’re joined this year by two of the Pacific Northwest’s most prominent groups of young musical talent. The amazing Seattle Girls Chorus will unveil composer Lori Laitman’s Bonaco, a new MOR choral commission setting the words of the secret magazine created by teenage girl prisoners in the Terezín concentration camp between 1943 and 1944. Like Vedem, the clandestine magazine of a group of teenage boy prisoners there, Bonaco is an inspiring testament to its young creators’ brave determination to maintain morale and faith in humanity amid death and destruction. And the incomparable Northwest Boychoir will perform a new choral arrangement of haunting songs that composer Viktor Ullmann wrote in Terezín before he was sent to his death in Auschwitz. Plus works by other composers from across Nazi-controlled Europe who perished in the Holocaust.
